What is a nakshatra?
The Vedic zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13°20′ of the sky. While your rashi (Moon sign) gives the broad brushstroke, your nakshatra gives the fine detail — temperament, instincts, and the planet that rules your Vimshottari dasha periods. Your “birth star” is the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth (this is the one people usually mean), though every planet, and your Lagna, also falls in a nakshatra.
To find yours precisely you need your date, exact time, and place of birth — the Moon moves quickly, so timing matters.

The ruling planet matters in practice: it’s the planet whose dasha (life period) you begin life running, and it recurs through your timeline.
Why find your nakshatra?
- It’s more personal than your Sun sign. Nakshatra is a finer division of the zodiac, so it says something specific rather than generic.
- It sets your dasha timeline. Your Moon nakshatra is the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha system that times the events of your life.
- It’s used for real decisions. Nakshatras guide compatibility matching, and traditionally the timing of important beginnings (muhurta).

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my nakshatra? Enter your date, exact time and place of birth. Your nakshatra is determined by the Moon’s precise position, so an accurate time gives an accurate result. Rohshan calculates it instantly and free.
Is my nakshatra based on the Sun or the Moon? The “birth star” people usually mean is your Moon’s nakshatra. Every planet and your Lagna also occupy a nakshatra, which practitioners use for deeper reading.
Can I find my nakshatra without my birth time? Approximately — but the Moon can change nakshatra within a day, so an exact time gives certainty. If your time is unknown, the result is a best estimate.
How many nakshatras are there? Twenty-seven, each 13°20′ wide, together covering the full 360° zodiac. (Some traditions also reference a 28th, Abhijit.)
Is the nakshatra finder really free? Yes. Seeing your nakshatra and full chart costs nothing. You only ever pay if you choose to generate a full written reading — and that’s yours to keep forever.
