Jaimini Astrology: Karakas, Arudha Padas and Chara Dasha

The sign-based parallel to Parashara — movable significators, the geometry of image, and a second clock for timing

Jaimini astrology is not a variant of the Parashari system but a parallel one, with its own aspects, its own significators, and its own dashas. It thinks in signs where Parashara thinks in planets, and it introduces two ideas of extraordinary predictive power — the chara karakas, which reassign significations by planetary degree, and the arudha padas, which model how a life is perceived rather than how it truly is. Used alongside the familiar tools, Jaimini gives a second, independent reading that confirms, refines, and occasionally overturns the first.

A different geometry: Rasi Drishti

Parashari astrology uses graha drishti — planetary aspects cast by degree. Jaimini adds rasi drishti — aspects cast between whole signs, independent of what occupies them. The rule follows the three modalities:

• Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) aspect the fixed signs, except the fixed sign adjacent to them.

• Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) aspect the movable signs, except the movable sign adjacent to them.

• Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) aspect the other dual signs.

Every sign therefore aspects exactly three others, and the pattern is reciprocal. Rasi drishti governs how arudhas and karakas interact across the wheel, and learning to see it — as a layer laid over the ordinary planetary aspects — is the first shift a Parashari astrologer must make to read Jaimini.

The Chara Karakas: significators by degree

Jaimini's most distinctive tool reassigns life-significations not by fixed rule but by planetary longitude. Rank the planets by the degrees they have advanced within their signs, highest to lowest, and each rank takes a chara ("movable") karaka role. In the eight-karaka scheme Rahu is included and measured in reverse; the seven-karaka scheme omits it.

The Atmakaraka is the single most important significator in Jaimini — the planet with the most to say about the soul's agenda across lifetimes. Its Navamsha sign, the Karakamsha, becomes the Lagna of a derived chart read for a person's deepest drives, spiritual path, and worldly destiny. Planets and signs in trine to the Karakamsha describe the soul's talents; the twelfth from it points toward liberation.

Practitioner’s note. The Darakaraka is the fastest cross-check in astrology for the spouse. Whatever the 7th house and Venus suggest, the DK — and the sign and planets around it — must corroborate. When the two disagree, look harder before you speak.

Arudha Padas: the chart of perception

The arudha is Jaimini's model of Maya — how a matter appears in the world, as distinct from what it truly is. The natal house shows the reality; its arudha shows the reflection people actually see. To find an arudha, count from a house to its lord, then count the same number of signs onward from the lord. Two correction rules keep the arudha from collapsing onto its own house: if it lands in the house itself, take the tenth from there; if it lands in the seventh from the house, likewise take the tenth.

Two arudhas dominate practice:

• Arudha Lagna (AL) — the arudha of the 1st house: the native's image, reputation, status, and material manifestation. A person is judged by their AL far more than by their true Lagna. Wealth, fame, and public standing are read from and around the AL, not only from the birth Ascendant.

• Upapada Lagna (UL) — the arudha of the 12th house: the primary indicator of marriage and the spouse in Jaimini. The strength of the UL, the planets on and aspecting it, and especially the 2nd from the UL and its lord describe whether a marriage forms and endures.

Reading the AL and UL alongside the true houses reveals the gap between substance and perception — a modest chart that projects greatness, or a rich inner life the world never sees. That gap is often where the most useful counsel lies.

Argala: intervention on a sign

Jaimini judges how a sign's results are helped or hindered through argala — "intervention." Planets in the 2nd, 4th, and 11th from a sign create argala that supports it; planets in the 12th, 10th, and 3rd create counter-intervention, virodhargala, that obstructs. Argala is neutralised when the obstructing houses are as strong as the supporting ones. This gives a clean way to read whether the affairs of any sign — or any arudha — will unfold with support or against resistance, and it applies equally to the karakas placed across the chart.

Chara Dasha: a second clock

Where Vimshottari is a planetary dasha, Chara Dasha is a rasi dasha — the major periods belong to signs, not planets. The sequence begins from the Lagna and moves forward or backward depending on whether the Ascendant is an odd- or even-footed sign, and each sign's period length derives from the distance of the sign to its lord — counted zodiacally for odd signs and reverse for even, with the years set by that count (a sign whose lord sits in it takes the full twelve years, and the dual-lorded signs Scorpio and Aquarius have their own conventions).

Within each rasi period you read the sign as the operative Lagna: the planets in it and aspecting it, the arudhas that fall there, and above all the karakas occupying or influencing it. A Darakaraka activated by the running rasi dasha times marriage; an Amatyakaraka so activated times a career turn. Because Chara Dasha is built on an entirely different principle from Vimshottari, agreement between the two is powerful confirmation — and disagreement is a signal to investigate before predicting.

Practitioner’s note. Several textual traditions define Chara Dasha's counting slightly differently (Parashara's and Raghava Bhatta's rules diverge on the even-sign direction and a few durations). Fix one method, learn it thoroughly, and apply it consistently rather than switching between software defaults.

Using Jaimini beside Parashara

1. Cross-check significators: DK against the 7th house for the spouse, AmK against the 10th for career, MK against the 4th for the mother.

2. Read reputation and wealth from the Arudha Lagna, not the true Lagna alone.

3. Read marriage from the Upapada and its second, alongside the Parashari 7th house.

4. Read the soul's path from the Karakamsha and its trines.

5. Confirm Vimshottari timing with Chara Dasha; treat convergence of the two as strong, divergence as a caution.

Common mistakes

• Applying planetary aspects where sign aspects belong, or vice versa — rasi drishti and graha drishti are different systems.

• Switching between the seven- and eight-karaka schemes mid-reading; choose one and stay with it for the whole chart.

• Forgetting the arudha correction rules and letting an arudha collapse onto its own house.

• Reading the Arudha Lagna as the real self rather than as image and perception.

• Treating Jaimini as a rival to Parashara. It is a second, independent witness; its value is greatest when it confirms or challenges the first reading, not when it replaces it.

Learned as a parallel language rather than a set of tricks, Jaimini gives the astrologer a second pair of eyes — one that sees the soul through the Atmakaraka, the world's gaze through the arudhas, and time through a clock that keeps its own independent count.
