When Will I Get Married? How Vedic Astrology Times Marriage (and What Causes Delays)

By Rohshan · 3 October 2026 · 23 min read

Ask any astrologer which question they hear most and the answer is almost always the same. Not money, not career, not health. "When will I get married?"

It is asked by people who are single and hopeful, by couples wondering when it will become official, and by parents watching the years go by. It is also the question horoscope columns answer worst. "Venus smiles on Taureans this month" is said to roughly one in twelve people at once. It cannot know anything about you.

Vedic astrology works differently. It reads your whole birth chart (your kundli) and asks three questions in strict order: is marriage promised, which period of life switches that promise on, and which planetary movement triggers it? Promise, period, trigger. Line up all three and you have a genuine window. Miss one and you have a guess.

This guide walks through each layer using classical Parashari and Jaimini principles, with a step-by-step method you can follow in Rohshan's free birth chart app, a worked hypothetical example, and a sign-by-sign table of when Jupiter touches your 7th house in 2026 and 2027.

Key takeaways: Marriage timing needs three things to agree. The promise comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus (and Jupiter), the Navamsha (D9), the Upapada Lagna and the Darakaraka. The period comes from the Vimshottari dasha of a planet linked to those factors. The trigger is usually Jupiter's transit over or aspecting your 7th house or 7th lord, ideally with Saturn joining in (the "double transit"). Delays are about timing, not denial, and Saturn's delays often bring the steadiest marriages.

Why your sun sign can't answer this question

Two people born on the same day share a sun sign, yet one may marry at twenty-two and the other at thirty-eight. Their charts differ in the things that actually time events: the rising sign, the house positions, and the dasha sequence that flows from the Moon's nakshatra (lunar mansion).

The rising sign, or Lagna, changes roughly every two hours. It decides which sign falls in your 7th house, the house of marriage, and therefore your 7th lord and much of your timing.

So "marriage prediction by date of birth" really means prediction by date, time and place. The date gives planet positions; the time gives houses and dasha dates. Without a time you can still say something useful, and Prashna (which we'll come to) needs no birth data at all, but precise timing comes from the full chart.

Your mahadasha, the planetary period you're living through, says more about when you'll marry than your zodiac sign ever could.

The three layers: promise, period, trigger

Classical Jyotisha has a principle that saves a great deal of confusion: a dasha can only deliver what the birth chart promises, and a transit can only trigger what the dasha has switched on.

Think of a railway. The promise is whether the track exists. The period is the season when trains run on that line. The trigger is the departure you actually catch.

Most mistaken predictions skip a layer. Someone sees Jupiter entering their 7th house and announces "marriage this year" without checking the dasha. Or a beautiful 7th house is read as "early marriage" when the relevant dasha doesn't arrive until the person's thirties.

Layer one: the promise of marriage in your chart

Almost every chart shows partnership in some form. What varies is the ease, the timing and the texture. These are the factors to read.

The 7th house and the 7th lord

The 7th house (kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse) sits opposite your Lagna. In whole-sign houses, which Rohshan uses, it is simply the seventh sign from your rising sign: Libra for Aries rising, Aquarius for Leo rising.

The planet ruling that sign is your 7th lord, the single most important marriage indicator. Ask:

  • Where is it? In an angle (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trine (5th, 9th) it gives marriage more readily. In a dusthana (the difficult 6th, 8th or 12th houses) it often brings delay or an unusual path.
  • How strong is it? Own sign or exaltation helps. Debilitation or combustion (being too close to the Sun) weakens it.
  • What influences it? Jupiter and Venus support it. Saturn slows and matures it. Mars energises it, sometimes with friction. Rahu and Ketu add unpredictability.

Planets in the 7th house matter too. Benefics there generally ease marriage. Saturn tends to bring later, more serious commitment; Mars brings passion and some friction; Rahu or Ketu can bring an unconventional relationship or a partner from a different background.

Venus and Jupiter: the natural significators

Every house has a natural significator, a karaka. For marriage and romantic love it is Venus (Shukra), in every chart: attraction, affection, harmony and pleasure in partnership.

Classical texts also give Jupiter (Guru) a special role. Traditionally Venus signifies the wife in a man's chart and Jupiter the husband in a woman's chart. Many contemporary astrologers read both planets for everyone: Venus for love and the relationship itself, Jupiter for blessing, commitment and the sanctity of marriage. That inclusive approach also works naturally for same-sex couples and anyone outside the traditional categories. Rohshan's reading looks at both, whatever your gender or relationship.

A strong Venus linked to the 1st or 7th house is one of the clearest signs that partnership comes naturally. A combust or debilitated Venus doesn't deny marriage, but the path may be less straightforward.

The Navamsha divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′. It is so closely tied to marriage that it is often called the marriage chart. A planet strong in the birth chart but weak in the Navamsha often promises more than it delivers; one strong in the Navamsha tends to mature well.

Check the Navamsha Lagna and its lord, the Navamsha 7th house and its lord, and where Venus and your birth-chart 7th lord fall. Generate yours with the free Navamsa chart calculator.

The Upapada Lagna

The Upapada Lagna (UL) comes from the Jaimini tradition. It is the arudha (worldly image) of the 12th house. Where the 7th house shows the partner, the Upapada shows marriage as a visible event: the ceremony and the union as family and society see it.

To find it, count from the 12th house to its lord, then count the same number of signs onward from the lord. (If that lands in the 12th house itself or the 7th from it, the rule moves it to the 10th from that point.) The Upapada's sign, its lord and the 2nd from it all matter for timing and for how the marriage is sustained.

The Darakaraka: the spouse significator

Also from Jaimini, the Darakaraka (DK) is the planet with the lowest degree within its sign among the seven classical planets (some include Rahu in an eight-planet scheme). It represents the spouse personally, and its periods are prime candidates for meeting or marrying. Our article on Jaimini karakas and Arudha padas goes deeper.

Reading from the Moon as well

Vedic astrology often reads a chart twice: from the Lagna and from the Moon (Chandra Lagna). The 7th sign from your Moon shows the emotional side of partnership. When the two 7th houses agree, the promise is clearer.

Layer two: the period (which dasha gives marriage?)

The Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that begins from the Moon's birth nakshatra. Each mahadasha (major period) lasts six to twenty years and divides into antardashas (sub-periods). Events tend to happen when both the mahadasha and antardasha lords connect to the matter.

For marriage, these planets' periods most often deliver it:

  1. The 7th lord, the strongest single candidate.
  2. Planets in the 7th house, and to a lesser degree planets aspecting it.
  3. Venus, for everyone, and Jupiter, especially in the traditional significator view.
  4. Rahu, which amplifies desire. Rahu periods are famous for sudden relationships, especially when Rahu sits on the 1st–7th axis or with Venus.
  5. The Navamsha Lagna lord and Navamsha 7th lord.
  6. The Darakaraka.
  7. The lord of the Upapada sign, and planets in the Upapada or the 2nd from it.
  8. The 2nd and 11th lords when linked to the 7th. The 2nd is family (kutumba), which marriage enlarges. The 11th is fulfilled desires, and it is the 5th from the 7th, the partner's house of romance.

A practical rule: when both period lords connect to this list, especially to the 1st, 2nd, 7th and 11th houses together, a marriage window is open. When they are tied mainly to the 6th, 8th or 12th, commitments may stall and the period may suit study, travel or work instead.

Don't neglect the dispositor, the lord of the sign a dasha planet occupies: a planet sitting in the 7th lord's sign can give marriage too. Rohshan's Vimshottari dasha calculator lists every period with dates.

A good dasha is a door that opens. It is not a guarantee that you'll walk through it, but people very often do.

Layer three: the trigger (transits that time the event)

Within an open dasha, the transits (gochara) of the slow planets pick the months. Jupiter spends about a year in a sign and Saturn about two and a half years, which makes them reliable timers.

Jupiter's transit to your 7th house

In Vedic astrology every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself, and Jupiter also aspects the 5th and 9th. So Jupiter activates your 7th house when it:

  • transits the 7th house itself,
  • aspects it from the 11th (Jupiter's 9th aspect), the 3rd (its 5th aspect) or the 1st (its 7th aspect),
  • transits over or aspects your natal 7th lord or Venus.

Check from both the Lagna and the Moon. A Jupiter transit that activates the 7th from both at once is a strong signal. Jupiter's touch tends to bless, expand and formalise.

The double transit of Jupiter and Saturn

One of the most widely used timing rules in modern Vedic practice is the double transit: an event is most likely when both Jupiter and Saturn influence the relevant house or its lord at the same time. Jupiter brings willingness and blessing; Saturn brings concrete commitment and paperwork.

Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th signs from itself. So Saturn in your 1st house aspects your 7th, and Saturn in your 10th aspects it too. When Jupiter touches the same house in the same months, within a supportive dasha, you have one of the most reliable markers there is.

Rahu and Ketu on the 1st–7th axis

The lunar nodes stay on one axis for about eighteen months. When they cross your 1st and 7th houses, relationship themes come to the front. Rahu brings sudden attraction or an unconventional match; Ketu brings detachment or a sense of karmic completion. Such transits coincide with turning points of all kinds, so read them with the dasha.

From 6 December 2026 to 24 June 2028, Rahu transits Capricorn and Ketu transits Cancer, putting the nodes on the 1st–7th axis for Cancer and Capricorn Lagnas and Moon signs.

Venus transits: fine-tuning to weeks

Venus crosses a sign in about a month (longer when retrograde). Its transit over your 7th house, 7th lord, natal Venus or Lagna often marks the weeks of a proposal or ceremony within a window already opened by dasha and Jupiter.

A step-by-step method you can follow

Open your chart (the Advanced view shows divisional charts and dashas) and work down the table.

StepWhat to doWhat you're looking for
1Note your Lagna and Moon sign, and the 7th sign from each.Your two 7th houses and their lords.
2Find the 7th lord's house and dignity; list planets in the 7th.Angles, trines, good dignity: easier. Dusthana, combust, debilitated: slower.
3Check Venus (and Jupiter): house, sign, aspects, combustion.Benefic links to the 1st or 7th: favourable. Saturn on Venus: later, steadier.
4Open the Navamsha. Note its Lagna lord and 7th lord, and where Venus and your 7th lord fall.Confirmation or qualification of the promise.
5Find the Upapada Lagna, its lord, and your Darakaraka.Extra dasha candidates.
6Shortlist marriage significators from steps 2–5, plus Rahu and any 2nd or 11th lord linked to the 7th.The planets whose periods can deliver marriage.
7On your dasha timeline, mark every mahadasha–antardasha pair where both lords are on the shortlist.Your candidate years.
8Within each window, check Jupiter's transit against your 7th houses, 7th lord and Venus. The months Jupiter activates the 7th.
9Add Saturn. Where both touch the 7th or its lord, mark a double transit.Your strongest months.
10Layer in Rahu–Ketu, Venus and the pratyantardasha (sub-sub-period).Fine-tuning and flavour.

Two cautions. An accurate birth time matters, since a few minutes can move the Navamsha Lagna and shift dasha dates by weeks. And life context matters: the same window means something very different at sixteen than at twenty-nine.

A worked example (hypothetical chart)

Here is a hypothetical chart, invented purely for illustration. It belongs to no real person, and we've deliberately made several indicators agree so the logic is easy to follow. Real charts are usually messier.

The promise

FactorPosition (hypothetical)Reading
LagnaLibra (Tula), 2°7th house is Aries (Mesha); 7th lord is Mars.
7th lord MarsLeo (Simha), 3°, 11th houseMarriage linked to fulfilled wishes, friends and social circles.
VenusLibra, 18°, 1st house, own signStrong karaka in the Lagna, aspecting the 7th house.
JupiterGemini (Mithuna), 15°, 9th houseIts 5th aspect falls on the Lagna and Venus: blessing on love.
SaturnCapricorn (Makara), 14°, 4th houseIts 10th aspect falls on the Lagna and Venus: maturity, some patience.
MoonCancer (Karka), 18°, Ashlesha, 10th house7th from the Moon is Capricorn, holding its own lord Saturn.
Mercury, SunMercury Libra 5°; Sun Virgo (Kanya) 26°Mercury rules the 12th house, used for the Upapada.
NavamshaD9 Lagna Libra (vargottama); Mars in Aries, the D9 7th; Venus in Pisces (exalted)The D9 strongly confirms the birth chart.
Upapada LagnaScorpio (Vrishchika), 2nd houseMercury is 2 signs from Virgo, so count 2 from Libra: Scorpio, ruled by Mars.
DarakarakaMars (lowest degree, 3°)Mars represents the spouse in Jaimini terms too.

The promise is clearly positive. Venus is strong in the Lagna and aspects the 7th. The Navamsha Lagna matches the birth Lagna (vargottama, a mark of consistency), its lord Venus is exalted there, and Mars occupies the D9 7th in its own sign. Mars is at once the 7th lord, the Darakaraka and the Upapada lord, so Mars periods are obvious candidates.

Saturn's aspect on the Lagna and Venus is the qualifier. It doesn't deny marriage; it suggests early infatuations may not become commitment, and that marriage comes once the person feels settled. Saturn as 7th lord from the Moon, in its own sign, agrees: a serious, responsible, perhaps slightly older partner.

The period

With the Moon in Ashlesha (a Mercury nakshatra), the dashas run Mercury, then Ketu, then a twenty-year Venus mahadasha, which for our hypothetical person began in 2020. Venus is the Lagna lord, the marriage karaka and the D9 Lagna lord, so the whole mahadasha supports relationships.

Within it the antardashas run Venus, Sun, Moon, then Mars. That places Venus–Mars from about August 2026 to about October 2027. Both period lords are prime significators. The period layer is wide open.

The trigger

DatesJupiter inWhat it touches in this chart
Until 31 October 2026CancerThe natal Moon; aspects Capricorn (7th from Moon) and Scorpio (the Upapada).
31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027 (retrograde from 13 December 2026)LeoOver natal Mars, the 7th lord; aspects Aries (the 7th house) and Aquarius (the 5th, romance).
25 January to 26 June 2027CancerBack on the Moon, aspecting the 7th from Moon and the Upapada.
26 June to 26 November 2027LeoOver Mars again, aspecting the 7th house, where Saturn arrived on 2 June 2027: a double transit.

Rahu's move into Capricorn on 6 December 2026 puts it on the 7th from the Moon, over natal Saturn. That fits a relationship that develops quickly or unexpectedly, perhaps through a social circle (the 11th-house Mars) rather than a formal introduction.

The reading: all of Venus–Mars is an open window. The late-2026 Leo phase, with Jupiter on the 7th lord, suits meeting someone significant or an engagement. The mid-2027 Leo phase, with Jupiter and Saturn both on the 7th house in the same sub-period, is the strongest candidate for the marriage itself. Saturn's retrograde later in 2027 loops it back towards Pisces for a while, so a careful astrologer would check the exact overlap in the transit view. Venus–Rahu, from late 2027, would carry the theme on if timing slips.

Notice what we did not say: "you will marry on this date". We said the chart, period and transits agree these are the most supportive months. Choices, circumstances and the other person's chart all play their part.

Early or late marriage? Reading the age indicators

No chart prints an age for "marriage age prediction", and social norms vary hugely. What a chart shows is whether the factors lean towards ease and speed or towards patience and maturity.

Leans earlier or easierLeans later or slower
Venus strong and linked to the 1st or 7thSaturn aspecting or occupying the 7th, the 7th lord or Venus
Jupiter aspecting the 7th, 7th lord or Venus7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th house
Benefics in the 7th houseVenus combust or debilitated
7th lord in an angle or trine, well placedRahu or Ketu on the 1st–7th axis
Lagna lord and 7th lord connected7th lord or Venus hemmed between malefics
Marriage dashas arriving in early adulthoodMarriage dashas arriving later in life

That last row is often decisive. A lovely 7th house can still marry later because the relevant dashas come later, and a chart with several "delay" factors can marry young if the right dasha runs early.

Saturn and delay in marriage

"Delay in marriage astrology" nearly always leads back to Saturn, the planet of time and structure. When it influences the 7th, the 7th lord or Venus, marriage often comes after the person has built a career or learned something important about themselves.

That isn't a punishment. Saturn-influenced marriages are frequently stable, loyal and built to last. Saturn tends to remove what won't hold and reward what will.

Delay is a statement about timing, not about worth. A later marriage is still a marriage, and often a wiser one.

Rahu, Ketu and unconventional timing

Rahu on the 7th can bring a sudden or cross-cultural marriage, sometimes earlier than anyone planned. Ketu on the 7th can make a person indifferent to marriage for long stretches, or draw a spiritually minded partner. Neither is "bad"; both describe a path that doesn't follow the script.

Love or arranged marriage? What the chart suggests

The chart shows tendencies, never rules. Plenty of arranged marriages become deeply loving, and many love marriages are warmly blessed by both families. The key houses are the 5th (romance, the heart's choice) and the 7th (formal partnership), with the 9th and 2nd bringing in tradition and family.

Leans towards a love or self-chosen marriageLeans towards an arranged or introduced marriage
5th lord and 7th lord connected (conjunction, mutual aspect, sign exchange)7th lord linked to the 9th house or 9th lord (tradition, elders)
5th lord in the 7th, or 7th lord in the 5th7th lord linked to the 2nd house (family)
Venus and Mars together or in mutual aspectJupiter strongly influencing the 7th or its lord
Rahu linked to the 5th, 7th or VenusSaturn on the 7th without 5th-house links

Many charts show both, and life often follows: two people meet on their own and the families then come together. In our hypothetical example, the 7th lord in the 11th points to meeting through friends, while Saturn's aspect suggests family approval matters too.

Second marriage and remarriage: a gentle note

Some people ask about a second marriage after a separation or bereavement, wanting to know if love will come again. This is an area for care, not drama.

Astrologers look at the 2nd house (family continuity, and the 8th from the 7th, so the longevity of the bond), the 8th house (shared life and in-laws) and the Navamsha. Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) on the 7th, several planets in the 7th, or a 7th lord in a dual sign are often read as more than one significant partnership in a lifetime. Some schools also use the 9th house (the 3rd from the 7th) or the 11th for a later partner.

Read these as possibilities, not verdicts. They can describe a long relationship before marriage, a happy remarriage after loss, or one marriage that renews itself in a very different second chapter. No responsible astrologer predicts divorce from a chart. If you are facing a separation, a qualified counsellor or legal adviser is the right first call.

Kundli Milan, Manglik dosha and your future spouse

Once a real person is in the picture, families often turn to Kundli Milan, the comparison of two charts. Its best-known part, Ashtakoota matching, scores the two Moon nakshatras out of 36 points across eight categories, but a thorough match also compares 7th houses, Venus, the Navamsha and each person's dashas. Our guide to Vedic horoscope matching covers it all.

Manglik dosha (Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house) is very common, has many classical cancellations, and on its own is no reason to fear delay. Read Manglik dosha explained before letting it shape any decision.

And if your real question is "who" rather than "when", the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the Darakaraka describe the partner. See what your spouse will be like in Vedic astrology.

When Jupiter activates your 7th house in 2026–27

Jupiter is unusually lively over the next two years. It is in Cancer now, enters Leo on 31 October 2026, turns retrograde on 13 December 2026, slips back into Cancer on 25 January 2027, re-enters Leo on 26 June 2027 and moves into Virgo on 26 November 2027. Because it moves back and forth, some signs get two windows.

  • Jupiter in Cancer (until 31 October 2026; 25 January to 26 June 2027) occupies Cancer and aspects Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces.
  • Jupiter in Leo (31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027; 26 June to 26 November 2027) occupies Leo and aspects Sagittarius, Aquarius and Aries.
  • Jupiter in Virgo (from 26 November 2027) occupies Virgo and aspects Capricorn, Pisces and Taurus.

Your 7th house is activated when Jupiter occupies or aspects the sign that is your 7th. Read the table for your Lagna, then again for your Moon sign.

Three reminders. This table covers the 7th house only; Jupiter touching your 7th lord or natal Venus can matter just as much, and only your own chart shows that. A sign with "no direct contact" is not shut out of marriage in 2026–27. And none of it works without the dasha. For more on the Leo phase, see Jupiter in Leo for all signs.

Practical advice, Prashna and simple remedies

Astrology is most useful when it changes how you act, not just what you expect.

  • Use the windows actively. An open dasha and a supportive Jupiter are good times to say yes to introductions, be more social, or have the honest conversation about the future.
  • Don't force a closed window. If the strongest period is a couple of years away, build the life you want to share. That is not wasted time.
  • Don't let fear decide. A Saturn aspect or a Manglik placement is no reason to rush into, or out of, a relationship.
  • Talk with your family. Showing anxious parents that the chart describes timing, not denial, can ease a lot of pressure.

When you have a specific proposal: ask a Prashna

Sometimes the question is sharper: "Will this proposal lead to marriage?" That is what Prashna, Vedic horary astrology, is for. A chart is cast for the moment you sincerely ask; the Lagna lord represents you, the 7th house and its lord the partner or marriage, and an applying aspect between them (an Ithasala) classically shows the matter coming together. No birth time is needed.

You can ask Rohshan a Prashna question for free, and the complete Prashna Jyotish guide explains how marriage questions are judged.

Remedies that stay practical

Classical remedies work best when they are simple, sincere and steady. None requires an expensive ritual.

  • For Venus: on Fridays, give to causes that help couples or families, such as a wedding for a family that can't afford one. Treat partners and the women in your life with generosity and respect.
  • For Jupiter: on Thursdays, honour teachers and elders, support education, and keep your word.
  • For Saturn: serve the elderly or people doing hard physical work, be patient and punctual, and finish what you start.
  • For Rahu and Ketu: avoid secrecy in relationships, keep steady routines, and spend quiet time each day in prayer, meditation or reflection.

When you act with patience and honesty, you are working with your chart rather than against it.

Frequently asked questions

Can astrology tell my exact marriage date?

Not reliably. A careful reading can narrow marriage to a window of months by combining the promise in your chart, the running dasha and Jupiter and Saturn's transits, but the exact date depends on choices and circumstances.

Which dasha gives marriage?

Marriage most often comes in the periods of the 7th lord, planets in the 7th house, Venus, Jupiter, Rahu, the Navamsha Lagna lord, the Darakaraka or the Upapada lord. It is strongest when both the mahadasha and antardasha lords are connected to these factors.

Does a Manglik dosha delay marriage?

Not by itself. Manglik dosha is very common and is cancelled in many charts, and marriage timing depends far more on the dasha and transits. It mainly matters for compatibility, where it is weighed during Kundli Milan.

Does Jupiter transiting my 7th house guarantee marriage?

No. Jupiter's transit is a trigger, and it delivers marriage only when the birth chart promises it and the running dasha supports it. Otherwise the same transit may bring new friendships, partnerships or a stronger existing relationship.

Is Saturn in the 7th house bad for marriage?

No. Saturn in or aspecting the 7th house tends to delay marriage or make it more serious and responsible. Saturn-influenced marriages often come later but are frequently stable and long-lasting.

Can my chart show a love or arranged marriage?

It can show tendencies. Links between the 5th and 7th lords, Venus with Mars, or Rahu on the 5th or 7th lean towards a love marriage, while links to the 9th and 2nd houses lean towards family involvement. Many people experience a blend of both.

Should I use my ascendant or Moon sign for marriage timing?

Use both. The 7th house from the Lagna is primary for events, and the 7th from the Moon shows the emotional side. Transits that activate the 7th from both at once are especially significant.

Can my chart predict my marriage age?

It can show whether marriage leans earlier or later. Strong Venus and Jupiter links to the 1st and 7th lean earlier, Saturn's influence or a 7th lord in a difficult house leans later, and the timing of the relevant dashas usually decides it.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Without a birth time the houses, Navamsha and dasha dates are uncertain, so precise timing is hard. You can still use your Moon sign for transit windows, or ask a specific question through Prashna, which needs no birth details.

Are there remedies for delayed marriage?

Yes, and the classical ones are simple: charity on Fridays for Venus and Thursdays for Jupiter, service and patience for Saturn, and honest, grounded habits. You never need to buy an expensive ritual.
