What is it?

In Jaimini astrology the Chara Karakas are significators assigned by degree rather than by fixed rulership. The planet sitting at the highest degree within its sign becomes the Atmakaraka — the significator of the soul, and the central planet for reading a person's core purpose and lifelong themes.

How it's calculated

  1. Take the degree of each planet within its own sign (ignore which sign it is in).
  2. Rank all the planets by that degree, highest first.
  3. The highest is the Atmakaraka; the second is the Amatyakaraka, and so on through the eight Chara Karakas.
  4. Rahu is measured in reverse, since it moves retrograde.

Why it matters

The Atmakaraka is read as what the soul is working on in this lifetime. Its condition, house, sign and dasha periods carry unusual weight — a difficult Atmakaraka is traditionally read as the area where the most growth is demanded, not simply as misfortune.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Atmakaraka?

The Atmakaraka is the planet at the highest degree in the birth chart, treated in Jaimini astrology as the significator of the soul and the central planet for reading life purpose.

How do I find my Atmakaraka?

Compare the degree each planet occupies within its sign — not its longitude in the zodiac. The planet with the highest degree is the Atmakaraka.

Are Rahu and Ketu included?

Rahu is included in most traditions and measured in reverse because it is always retrograde. Ketu is usually excluded from the Chara Karaka scheme.

What if two planets have almost the same degree?

The higher degree wins, measured to the arc-second. This is why an accurate birth time matters — though the Atmakaraka is more stable than the ascendant, since planetary degrees change slowly.
